Lexus LS 430 Road Test 2001 - If Remember way back in late 1989 when Lexus stormed into the luxury sedan market with its ground-breaking LS 400? Recall the uproar this caused? Well, don't be surprised to see history repeat itself this fall when the new LS 430 model rolls into dealerships.

This car is better known as Bigger, bolder, more powerful, and more luxurious, the new top-line Lexus also packs a whole new generation of high-tech tricks beneath its sleek ultra-fast 0.25 Cd sheetmetal's drag-the best to be found on any current high-end cruisers.

Now dubbed LS 430 in deference to its larger-displacement V-8, this formidable four-door maintains its current 196.7-inch overall length, but rides on a 3-inch-longer wheelbase than before (up from 112.2 to 115.2 inches). Lexus says that extra wheelcenter-to-wheelcenter span makes the LS 430 more spacious inside than a new Mercedes Benz S-Class. Its standard fully independent the same underpinnings can be augmented by a new Adaptive Variable Suspension with Air Suspension option. On the stopping side, the LS 430 's four-wheel-disc binders are augmented by standard Brake Assist. Other aids include dynamic Traction Control & Vehicle Skid Control systems.

Raise the hood & you'll find a super-ULEV-and-smooth clean-4.3-liter V-8 DOHC V-8 that make the same 302 horsepower as the current 4.0-liter, but twists out an additional 20 pounds-feet of torque (for 320 total). Fitted with the latest strain of VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) for maximum output across the entire rev range & an electronically controlled five-speed automatic, Lexus claims the LS 430 will run 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds. (However, that's only 0.1-second quicker than the last LS 400 we tested, so the actual numbers may be quicker.)

This primo Lexus is swathed in leather & fine wood trim accent. An expanding the existing roster of mega-LS standard features, the new LS 430 gets a six-disc in-dash CD changer & a fully automatic dual-zone climate control package that features individual temperature & sun sensors on each side of the passenger compartment. Key options include a DVD-ROM-based GPS navigation system, Mark Levinson audio package, designer a hands-free cellular phone, individually heated/cooled front buckets & a rear seat with power rake adjustment & heater/massager element. Mercedes-Benz may have fired the first salvo in this latest round of skirmishing luxo-sedan with its brilliant new S-Class; but the not-unsimilarly styled 2001 LS 430 promises to make this a most interesting confrontation in the trenches of the rich & famous. Pricing has not been released, but our guess is that the price range will stay pretty close to that of today's $ 54,000-$ 60,000 LS 400.
